The name comes from the warriors of the British Empire, the "gurkhas", mainly Nepalese soldiers hired by the army.

In 1887, they adopted the practice of rolling their cigars from the local tobacco of the various colonies - which inspired the brand, renowned for its premium cigars and limited series.
