A bit of history

JURA comes from the old Norse name for deer. It is a small island of 55km by 11km, inhabited by about 255 people and many more deer.

The people of Jura were allowed to make their own whiskey until 1781, when it was forbidden.

There was a saying that whiskey making on the island would stop when the last person to leave the island was a one-eyed man with all his possessions in a cart.

And one day, the last Campbell (owner of the distillery) closed the distillery, with all his belongings in a cart and he had, apparently, a glass eye... .

The distillery was sold and taken over several times. Today it is owned by Whyte and Mackay.

Jura uses very large stills (more than 8 meters high) allowing a better reflux of the alcohol vapors in the middle of the still.
